PECHA KUCHA and “FAIRY TALES”

Pecha Kucha was invented by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in Tokyo and is an event in which a maximum of 14 presenters share ideas about whatever they’re interested in. The word Pecha Kucha [pronounced pe-CHAK-cha] comes from Japanese and it means “chit-chat”.

PechaKucha is a simple PowerPoint presentation where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The presentation is set to advance automatically and the presenter comments on each image. The slides cannot contain animation, or video, or music.

I decided to try Pecha Kucha with two of my classes and, wishing to give everyone the chance to speak and to see all my students present during a 50-minute class, I changed the original 20X20 to a 10X20 presentation. Actually, all presentations have 12 slides, but the first and the last are not counted, as they contain titles, credits etc.

With 9 B, the main theme was “Christmas around the world”, while 9 C worked on “Fairy Tales”. The students worked in pairs and each class created 14 presentations with 10 slides and 20 seconds to talk about each slide. I instructed the students on the length of the paragraphs (between 30 and 40 words) and suggested they take turns when presenting. Although I told them to avoid using animation, video or music, some of them couldn’t help themselves…

Warned about copyright rules, my students used images they found on the internet, free downloadable stuff.

The Ugly Duckling

1 Ati:  Once upon a time down on a old farm lived a very ordinary duck family.

2 Mario: It was under one of these leaves that a duck was sitting on her nest. Her ducklings were taking such a long time to hatch that she was beginning to lose patience.

3 Ati: The nest held four small eggs and one big egg. Crack! Four damps duckling hatched! “What a big world!”They cheeped.

4 Mario: The big egg had not hatched yet.”I bet that`s a turkey egg” said a granny duck.”Turkeys can’t swim.Don`t bother with it!”

5 Ati: But Mama did not leave the nest. She sat and waited. At last the big egg cracked wide open. Out popped a big gray duckling.

6 Mario: Mama looked at him. “Oh my” she said. “You aren’t like the others! Maybe you are a turkey. Let`s see if you can swim.”

7 Ati: Mama led them all to the lake. Splash! She slid into the water. Quack! The ducklings hopped into the water, too.

8 Mario: The ducklings dunked their heads and paddled their feet. The big gray duckling could float like a boat and paddle like a champ.

9 Ati: “No turkey can swim like that!” said Mama. She watched him glide over the water. He was her big gray duckling after all.

10 Mario: “Come with me”said Mama. “I`ll take you to meet the flock.” The Ducklings swat in a line across the lake.

Slide 6: Belle runs away from the castle and gets attacked by wolves. However, Beast comes and fights with the wolves and saves her.

Slide 7: From that point on, Belle becomes friends with the Beast, and everyone under the curse hopes she falls in love with him.

Slide 8: Beast gives her a magic mirror to remember him, and finally allows Belle to go and see her father.

Slide 9: Maurice has been deemed insane by everyone in the village because he believed there was a beast in the woods. Belle uses the magic mirror Beast gave her to show the village that her father wasn’t crazy, but that starts off the mob to go and kill the Beast…

Slide 10: Beast believes he is going to die, but Belle tries to comfort him and tells the Beast she loves him, just before the last petal falls.

Winnie The Bear

Presenters – Vlad G. & Vladimir Z.

Z: Once upon the time, a bear named Winnie the Pooh was walking in the forest and  heard the buzz of a bee. He went after the noise and then he sat down. He looked upwards and saw a honeycomb. And then he started to climb in the tree and accidentally fell off.

G: After he caught up a few branches, he fell in a bush. Then he thought that he’d make a visit to his friend Cristofor. His friend just got to Piglet where shared balloons. So he gave Winnie a blue one. He rolled over in a puddle of mud to disguise in a nimbus but he couldn’t get near the tree.

Z: Winnie thought that the bees were misled because their buzz has changed. Then he asked Cristofor to get him an umbrella so that the bees would thought that it`s raining. Cristofor smiled but still he got after the umbrella.

G: They tried to do it but nothing happened so the bees weren’t impressed. Cristofor asked Winnie how he’ll get down from there. But Winnie didn’t think about that. Then he had the brilliant idea of shooting the balloon. So Cristofor shot the balloon and so he slowly got down.

Z: In a summer morning Winnie was  walking in the forest and he was whistling freely. Then he got to a heap of sand with a big hole in it.He shouted in the  hole that there is living Mr Whiskers. But soon another creepy voice shouted back that nobody lives there and Mr Whiskers is gone to visit Winnie, then the bear said he is Winnie.

G: But then the voice said to enter if he was really Winnie. Then the creepy voice was Mr Whiskers. He offered Winnie milk and honey for breakfast and then they prepared to left. Mr Whiskers got out easily but Winnie was stuck because he was too big.

Z: Oh the poor bear. He shouted for help.Whiskers tried to pull him but Winnie was too heavy. Because he ate to much honey but he was complaining that these “modern homes” don’t have larger holes. He asked Cristofor for help and he said that it’s better to push him back.

G: Then Cristofor had the idea that Winnie must stay there a week to get off a few pounds. All that time they read stories to him that time should go much faster. At the time he loss the weight they pulled him out .

Z: In a winter day Winnie was hunting footprints. He met Piglet. He asked piglet to join the hunting for some dangerous animals that could be near them. Piglet suggested that the footprints may belong to a weasel. They have followed the footprints for some time and Winnie said that the weasel could’ve brought his girlfriend. After more hunting Winnie has stopped  scared pointing at the prints.

G:Another animal joined the other two.Piglet said that it could be two weasels and a growler. They continued their way very frightened and then he say 4 footprint marks in front of them. But then the snowman said to them that the two followed their own footprints.
